A Work in Progress...

Session three, The Mixed Technique:

After the first layer has dried thoroughly (about a week?), a second layer of medium is applied as a burnt umber glaze and subsequenly wiped off.   What is critical now is to use the underpaintings to indicate areas of color as their translucency can be very beautiful. The umber glaze unifies everything as well as sets the stage for bringing back in the highlights.  The highlight details on the roofs, trees and building sides directly facing the light are reintroduced, using a small sable brush to quickly delineate bricks, leaves and tiles.  The sky reflections in the water are introduced.  Soon the painting comes to life.  Since it is a landscape, one must listen to it's life.  Where is the imbalance?  What to push forward?  What to pull back?
