Oils: Belgium

Golden Hands East, Bruges, Belgium July 2006. Oil on panel over egg tempera
after value studies. 30 cm x 40 cm. SOLD.
Elusively charming. This painting was my third
attempt at rendering this canal, from this location.
Finally, a result that I can live with.
I think it's fair to say that painting Bruges
has literally forced me to refine my technique, moving from
thrashing about "en plen air" to knowledgeable value studies for
studio production. What remains as critical as ever,
whether painting outside or in, is to retain the truthful
freshness of the moment.
"Go deeper, nothing more is necessary."
