Egg Tempera:
Underpainting

Egg tempera underpainting for current project, Sint
Annarei Grande, March 2009, 59 x 44 cm. or 23 1/4" x 17 1/4"
After finding my previous painting of the
Spinolarei Grande too saturated in
some of the middle ground and background areas, I decided to
tone down my underpainting. Max Doerner advises keeping
the values lighter in the underpainting, otherwise there will be
no where to go when you begin to layer on in oils. It's
true! Thus this egg tempera has a pastelish look to it,
even though the india ink speaks through it to describe the high
contrast shadows. |
