Egg Tempera: Underpainting

Egg tempera underpainting for
Spinolarei Grande,
2006, 59 x 44 cm. or 23 1/4" x 17 1/4"
Although this is an underpainting, the colors
are quite saturated. I knew that I wanted to come in with
layers of brown glaze to unify everything leter in oils, so I felt that it was
important to state the purity of the colors from the get go - as
in the blue of the sky and water contrasted with the orange of
the tile roofs. In retrospect, I have learned that the
underpainting should not be so strong. In the
final oil,
certain colors became too saturated which became a
problem for describing subtle ephemeral distance. |
