After pulling 25 wooden panels out of storage recently, I conceived the intent to do a portrait in a piecemeal style.
It's an approach
I had applied successfully about 30 years ago but then abandoned for various reasons.
I felt ready to try it again but just lacked a subject.
Within days of my decision a friend of mine became unexpectedly diagnosed with a very serious illness, so this project is dedicated to her, to Anna.
The painting consists of 25 wooden panels, each measuring 3.5" x 5" or 8.9 cm x 12.7 cm. Each panel is painted with a different technique: oil, encaustic, egg tempera, silverpoint, india ink or a mixture thereof, and applied over a collaged or sculpted putty surface that has been primed with traditional gesso.
